Why the Firefly?

Sometimes a single moment gives us a new way of seeing the world, much like the powerful dementia reflections that can shift our perspective. This reflection tells the story of where Follow the Firefly began, illustrating how the smallest firefly stories can leave the deepest impression, emphasizing the importance of presence in care.

The Story

Facebook Reflection

What's with the firefly? People frequently ask me this question, especially when they notice my tattoo. It seems fitting to make this my first reflection. Last year, I traveled to the United States to attend the Memory Bridge Retreat, led by Michael Verde. It wasn't just another education program; it was an experience that challenged my perceptions of dementia, connection, and what it means to truly practice presence in care with another human being.

One evening, as the light began to fade, we wandered down the road to our little hut and found ourselves surrounded by fireflies. Tiny lights appeared one by one in the darkness—simply offering light, not trying to outshine or erase the surrounding night. That moment has stayed with me ever since.

It reminded me that working in dementia care isn't about ignoring the darkness. There are inevitable moments of grief, uncertainty, fear, and loss. We should not shy away from these feelings. However, if we look carefully, we can also find joy, laughter, music, love, purpose, and connection.

There are extraordinary moments of beauty in dementia reflections that deserve our attention, much like how I appreciated my natural surroundings during the retreat. The firefly became a symbol for me, a reminder that even the smallest acts of presence, kindness, or connection can illuminate someone's world.

That's why this page is called Follow The Firefly. Through these Firefly Stories, I hope to share observations that encourage us to notice, wonder, and reflect—not only about dementia but also about what it means to be human. After all, I believe that the smallest lights often make the greatest difference.

Until next time...
